Event description
Veneti Small Producer Wine Dinner at RGE RD co-hosted by James Beard Award nominated filmmaker Kevin Kossowan

About this Event

Join James Beard Award nominated filmmaker Kevin Kossowan and Quench Magazine wine editor Gurvinder Bhatia for a dinner showcasing wines from two of Italy’s Veneto region’s finest family-owned, independent wine producers paired with the award-winning, creative, locally inspired cuisine of Chef Blair Lebsack and the Rge Rd culinary team.

Kevin and Gurvinder spent several days in November 2019 in Italy filming a pilot for a documentary highlighting Villa Calicantus in Bardolino and Coffele in Soave Classico. They will share their experiences and stories of the people and place and what makes these producers and their wines so special.

The concept of ‘terroir’ is most associated with wine. Human involvement is necessary for great terroir because it is humans that must plant grape vines in the right place and it is humans that allow the place to be expressed in the bottle. As much as we speak about “natural” and “minimal intervention”, human involvement is necessary to grow quality wines that have a sense of place because wine (as does food) gets its context from the people, place, culture and history of where it is grown. And it is important to say “grown” because we tend to forget that wine is an agricultural product. There is a greater interest in knowing where our food comes from and we must ensure that the concern extends to the wines we drink. It is important that we tell the story of the wine growers.

Villa Calicantus is redefining people’s image of Bardolino. In 2011, Daniele Delaini, Villa Calicantus’s owner, decided to quit a “not bad job” in a bank in Paris to dedicate himself completely to a small vineyard his aunt Teresa gave him years before. Villa Calicantus is the smallest winery of the Bardolino wine area on the top of one of the highest hills of the Bardolino Classico area. They produce between 4000 and 7000 bottles per year. Villa Calicantus has produced organically since 2011 and with biodynamic agriculture since 2014. Villa Calicantus is dedicated to obtaining wines with elegance, finesse and complexity, authentic expressions of the Bardolino and Lago di Garda.

Coffele was the first certified organic producer in the Soave DOC Classico zone. The Coffeles were the first private vine grower of the Soave Classico zone to believe in the Castelcerino crus. They are the highest vineyards in the Soave Classico zone. They face south-south-west and there are notable differences between the southern soils (calcareous) and those to the north (basaltic). The former offer to the wines higher acidity, finesse and longevity, while the darker volcanic soils give more body and complexity. The constant presence of northerly winds keeps the grapes healthy, a benefit for the management of an organic vineyard.
