Come and listen to the exquisite and graceful music of the German baroque with Music Director Marco Vitale. Capriccio Vocal Ensemble will sing the gorgeous and rarely performed setting of the Vespers by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber from 1693. The male voices will also accompany the strings in von Biber’s haunting serenade for the Nightwatch. And two gorgeous works by Dietrich Buxtehude complete the concert – “Derr Herr ist mit Mir” and “Jesu, meines Lebens Leben.” Accompanied by Maestro Vitale on chamber organ, and by the constrasto armonico early music ensemble , you will not want to miss Capriccio’s final concert of our 2021-2022 season! Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was a Bohemian-Austrian composer and violinist.
He was among the major composers for the violin in the history of the instrument. His own technique allowed him to easily reach the 6th and 7th positions, employ multiple stops in intricate polyphonic passages, and explore the various possibilities of scordatura tuning.
Among other pieces, Biber wrote operas, sacred music and music for chamber ensembles.
Capriccio’s main focus for this concert will be Biber’s Vesperae longiores ac breviores una cum litaniis Lauretanis, composed in 1693.
The Litany of Loreto is used to honor Mary, the Mother of God.
The Litany recalls Mary's unique role as the mother of Jesus and invokes various titles for her as a way of honoring her and the role she has played.
Most likely the Litany was composed in or around Paris between the years 1150 and 1200. It gets its name from the Italian shrine (Loreto) where it was adopted in 1558. Pope Sixtus V approved its use in public worship in 1587. The Litany is used especially during May services, the month traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In addition, the choir will be performing two lovely works by Dietrich Buxtehude: “Jesu, meines Lebens Leben” and “Der Herr is mit mir.”
