Event description

Description

Immerse yourself in a two day exploration of basketry using a variety of weaving methods. The bark of the Western Red Cedar tree is our primary focus with other wild natural materials native to BC. Instruction is given using demonstrations, examples, books and photos. Design and weave a vessel to take home. Using a nicely shaped 1 litre bottle with a cork top as your base, participants will learn a variety of patterns and designs to personalize the bottle that can then be filled with any liquid of your choice! Together, we’ll celebrate the craft circle, weaving vessels with conversation.

The workshop runs from Saturday March 28th from 10-4pm to Sunday March 29th 10-4pm. 2020

All materials including weaving tools will be provided. Please bring a bag lunch and a mug for tea.

Amy Robertson began weaving in 2002, on Cortes Island, BC, starting with old cedar bark found on the forest floor. Soon after, she learned the craft of willow weaving and combined the materials to make bicycle baskets. In 2011, preferring the flexibility and quality of cedar, Amy met a Haida Indigenous teacher , where she learned both harvesting and weaving techniques. Since then, Amy has returned each year to Massett, to study with a Master weaver, Marlene Liddle. Amy produces a variety of woven baskets, covers for bottles & books, placemats, card-holders and bracelets. Her craft work has been shown in Victoria, Vancouver, and on Quadra and Cortes Islands, with a signature piece at the Hershel Supply Company store in Gastown in Vancouver. Amy teaches weaving wherever there is interest, providing a range of materials, styles and projects to anyone wanting to explore their creativity. See more work on her website.
