Nurse practitioner Jessicca Moore doesn’t fit the image of a home birth mom. But she and many of her medical colleagues -- doctors, nurses and midwives -- are choosing to give birth at home instead of the hospital.

In her new film called “Why Not Home?” Moore explores what’s behind their decisions, from an OB/GYN’s concerns about hospitals’ labor-timing protocols, high rates of infection, induction and cesareans, to a nurse’s lament about how much time she spends with charts, computers and paperwork, to others wanting the same caregiver for their entire pregnancy, birth and postpartum period.

Moore, who produced and directed this film, says she created it because she wanted to challenge cultural assumptions about what birth is and what it can be. She hopes the film will serve as a catalyst for change.

Women and families deserve to have accurate information and a maternity care system that supports a continuum of care that includes home birth and meets the varied needs and values of each unique family.”

The film follows several pregnancies through birth, including that of Dr. Michelle Minikel.

“Honestly, I thought people who birthed at home were crazy up until I got pregnant,” Dr. Minikel, whose family medical practice includes obstetrics, says in the film. “It was drilled into my head during training that that was not appropriate for anybody. And so it took me a long time to be able to come around and say, ‘actually, there are a lot of benefits there and this is what I want.’”

“Why Not Home?” answers many common questions, including:

-Whether birth is safe or better at home

-Why there is often conflicting data and political agendas surrounding home vs. hospital birth

-Who should give birth in a hospital

-Why midwifery care, which can play a key role in healthier births, is marginalized in the U.S. and standard throughout Europe

-Why US rates for c-sections (now at 32 percent), as well as maternal and infant mortality, are so poor (Victoria's c-section rate is one of the highest in Canada)

-What are the financial considerations of home vs. hospital birth

-How we can better integrate home birth into the medical system

-And ways to expand homebirth beyond the typical upper-middle-class white woman

*Following the film local midwives will discuss the relevance of the information for us here in Victoria and answer any questions you may have!*

Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Young Parents Support Network
