Description

This workshop is being offered to agencies and service providers in the domestic violence and sexual violence sector. It is not open to the general public.

Presentation Topic:

We're living in a rapidly changing, learn-as-we-go world right now. New rules and protocols seem to be updated daily (sometimes hourly). This new normal we're experiencing comes with it's unique set of challenges and opportunities, which we must learn to navigate while we're providing support and counselling services from a-far.

In this presentation, we'll look at the strengths and struggles that result from working online and with the use of technology. We'll also explore how to balance these challenges while considering ethical best practices and responsibilities.

During the Q & A, you'll have an opportunity to share your challenges, talk about your successes and explore unique situations we are facing when offering counselling services remotely.

Presenter: Anna Harland

Anna Harland's career has led her down interesting roads, working in a variety of roles within the not-for-profit framework and landing now as a therapist in her own private practice. In addition, she's also a Social Work Professor at the University of Calgary.

With a mindfulness based approach, weaving in body-focused therapies (Hakomi, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, EMDR) she dedicates her energy and focus on working with people who have experienced sexualized trauma, are working through developmental trauma or have attachment injuries.

Both online and in-person classes are familiar to her and even before the COVID19 crisis hit, she was working with clients through remote counselling. Right now all her work is facilitated through a virtual platform.

From a credential lens, Anna holds a MSW and Clinical Social Worker and a Clinical Supervisor, receiving her BA in Women's Studies from the U of C. Her Social Work degrees are courtesy of McGill University.
