About this event

This PIA educational virtual tour, organized by European-based, Canadian curator and art advisor Sarah Belden, will feature the private collection of Marta Gnyp. Gnyp will guide attendees through her private collection at her home in Berlin and will discuss the artists she has supported and collected over the past several years. In 2015, Gnyp also opened Gnyp Gallery with co-partner Giovanni Springmeier.

About the presenters

Marta Gnyp is a Dutch art historian based in Berlin, active as an international art advisor, gallerist, and author specializing in post-war and contemporary art. As both insider and researcher of the art world, she regularly contributes to theoretical investigations in the art field. Her book The Shift: Art and the Rise to Power of Contemporary Collectors based on her PHD research at the University of Amsterdam, forms the first systematic academic study on contemporary collecting. Her new third book, New Waves. Contemporary Art and The Issues Shaping Its Tomorrow was published by Skira last year. Canadian-born Sarah Belden completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree at New York University in 2000. She then went on to receive her Master's Degree from Christie's Education, New York in The History of the Art Market, Art History, and Connoisseurship . Since graduating, she has worked professionally within the art world in several diverse capacities. In addition to curating many independent projects over the years, she also worked at Christie's Auction House in the Post-War and Contemporary department and at numerous primary and secondary art market Galleries in New York, including Barbara Mathes, Zabriskie, and MikeWeiss Gallery, where she was director. Sarah Belden worked as Private Collections Manager for the Emily and Jerry Spiegel Collection in New York and has consulted on numerous projects in the U.S. and Europe, including the non-profit venture DIVA , the first digital and video art fair in the United States, and more commercial ventures such as Art Athina, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Athens. She has also led various VIP groups through art fairs such as ARCO, Madrid; Zona Maco, Mexico;E stampa, Madrid; Frieze NYC and London, Art Basel, Miami and Switzerland and many others.
