October 20 Walking Forward Together: Aboriginal Education Conference

We welcome all to enjoy a day of learning about Aboriginal Education as Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people walk forward together on this educational journey. The ticket will register you for this 1-day conference. Enjoy continental breakfast, a morning and afternoon keynote address, breakout sessions and a salmon lunch. On the day of the conference you will choose your breakout session, preregistration for the breakout sessions are not required.

If you register and do not attend, you will be charged $30 (even if your ticket was free) and no refunds will be issued 7 days before the conference for the purpose of accurate catering.

Breakout Sessions include:

3 Crows Production

Presentation of the Katzie First Nation Elder Cyril Pierre who speaks about his time at St. Mary’s Indian residential school in Mission, BC. Cyril will be joined by fellow classmate and lifelong friend Joseph Ginger of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation. Both Elders share their stories of the impact from residential schools.

C Session - Duration: 2 Hours

Sonny McHalsie

Explore the cultural landscape of the beautiful traditional Stó:lō territory with Naxaxalhts'i, Albert (Sonny) McHalsie. Naxaxalhts'i is currently the Cultural Advisor and Stó:lō Historian for the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. Naxaxalhts’i has studied Halq’eméylem place names for 21 years. Naxaxalhts'i will narrate the land – telling the Sxowxiyám and Swelqwels, the legends and the true stories, that give shape to the Stó:lō culture, history and people.

C Session - Duration: 2 Hours 15 minutes

FirstVoices

FirstVoices is a web-based project to support Aboriginal peoples' teaching and archiving of language and culture Come check out the latest version including new alphabet page that provides the written character set for a language, with sample sound files for each character; new interactive dictionary that provides a word list, with translations, definitions, sounds, images and videos; new phrase collections that contain everyday conversational language with related text, sound, image and video files to support language learning; new song and story collections that provide a place for First Nations language champions to gather their stories and songs and make them accessible via the Web as interactive "books” complete with audio and pictures; and new enhanced search capabilities.

Breakout Session with Dr. Lee Brown

A time for interactive discussion with Dr. Brown following his keynote on supporting students and understanding and developing emotional intelligence.
