Description

On September 5th, 2017, the District of Squamish (DOS) updated its Solid Waste Utility Bylaw. Changes to Squamish’s Solid Waste Utility Bylaw have been introduced to keep items that can be recycled or composted out of the Landfill. This will increase the lifespan of the Squamish Landfill and reduce our collective impact on the environment, as we work towards the goals laid out in Squamish’s Zero Waste Strategy. The bylaw now sets the standard that all properties are required to:

  • Have multi-stream waste collection (organics, garbage and multi-stream recycling);
  • Separate garbage, organics and recyclables prior to disposal;
  • Manage waste contamination to keep it below a 20% threshold, which will decrease by 5% annually until a 5% contamination threshold is met;
  • Provide education on how to separate and deposit waste into the correct bins annually;
  • Implement regionally standardized, colour-coded signage; and
  • Ensure the use clear bags for garbage, with the option of a small opaque privacy bag, which cannot exceed 10% of residual waste.

An audit conducted in May 2016, showed that over 80% of the materials sent to landfill by ICI properties could have been diverted for recycling or composting. These divertible materials included 33% organics, 20% paper, 14% building materials and 13% plastic. To help businesses find ways to maximize organic waste diversion, minimize food waste and separate recyclables, the DOS is working with AWARE to offer specialized tools and training to commercial properties. Many businesses are already separating organic waste and recycling from garbage. For others, this change will require some additional preparation.

In recognition that some businesses will need help adapting to the updated waste regulations, workshops are being offered to help businesses prepare.

This workshop will provide:

  • A brief overview of the DOS’s Solid Waste Utility Bylaw;
  • Practical guidance on updating shared waste storage spaces in Commercial properties – from building and retrofitting garbage rooms to access and signage;
  • Key steps to take to ensure users find success with the new waste systems – from engaging and training staff to monitoring waste within a business;
  • Access to a wide-range of free guides and tools to take away and use following the workshop.

The one-hour workshops will be packed with practical guidance. In recognition that every business and property is different, the workshops focus on common themes and provide links and tools to more detailed information which attendees can access while working to implement new waste systems. Following the workshop, there will be time to connect with AWARE and DOS staff on questions specific to your individual property.

The ICI workshops are geared towards managers, supervisors and those who provide staff training in:

  • Restaurant, Retail and Commercial business operations;
  • Hotel and Mixed-Use Rental Properties (with both commercial and accommodation units);
  • Commercial Property Maintenance and Cleaning Teams.
