We are all Treaty People - A Gala Dinner
Event Information
Description
On Thursday, September 29, over 240 guests, a balance of Indigenous and non-Indigenous attendees will have the unique opportunity to “break bannock” together. This delightful evening will allow guests to embrace Treaty 7 traditions and ceremony. Singing, smudging and meaningful conversation will take place at intimate table gatherings to enjoy “family-style” traditional cuisine, paired with distinctive “forage drinks”.
This innovative meal will be co-created by three celebrated chefs: Grey Eagle’s Bill Alexander, River Café’s Matthias Fong and the Deane House’s Jamie Harling. Each table will have a First Nations “Ambassador” to guide the discussion and offer insight. There will be an interactive component to the evening, as an Indigenous artist will perform and lead the guests in the show’s Honour song. On exhibit will be the works of the six Indigenous artists invited to display at the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase.
Immediately following the dinner, guests will be escorted to the best seats in the house to enjoy the performance.
The cultural, multidisciplinary performance brings to life the promise of Treaty 7 – the time in Alberta’s history when land was assigned, assurances made and a better future promised to everyone, all Treaty People. Using contemporary and traditional art and performance, the play takes its audience on a journey through history to better understand the true spirit and intent of the treaty. This powerful performance also investigates the consequences and the implications of the treaty, faced by Alberta today.
