Overview
It may not seem like such a leap to consider that the brain plays a significant role in our lives by making numerous decisions automatically. That said, have you ever really considered how it does it? Being the powerful and sophisticated processing machine that it is, the brain regularly takes shortcuts to make sense of our experiences. Sometimes those shortcuts work in our favour, other times they play against us. This discussion aims to explore the various biases that significantly influence our perceptions and decision making.

Shane Spice has an honours degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Carleton University, and has been working in the field of mediation and dispute resolution for over 18 years. He is certified as a Third Party Neutral by the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution (CICR), he has completed the CINERGY Conflict Management Coaching Training Program, as well as the Boss Whisperer approach from the Boss Whispering Institute. He is also certified to deliver Essi Systems’ Building Resiliency, Professional Education and Behaviour Change Models. Shane trained and coached mediators with the Stitt Feld Handy Group for 12 years; and for 6 years was on the roster of volunteer mediators with Community Mediation Ottawa (CMO), a branch of CICR, which offers free mediation services in Ottawa to individuals, families and community organizations to help guide them in finding mutually beneficial solutions.
