Course Description

 Understanding and effectively utilizing the grievance process to resolve disputes arising from the administration/application of the collective agreement is essential in our complex and highly unionized workplaces.

This 45 minute webinar will introduce participants to:

  • what a grievance is;
  • the purpose and impact of the grievance process in the workplace and the relevant framework;
  • the role that union representatives and managers have inside of the grievance procedure; and
  • how to investigate, prepare and respond to grievances at each stage of the process.

Sonia Lachar, Executive Director, Labour Relations, BCPSEA

Sonia is our Executive Director, Labour Relations (Liaison Services). She joined the BCPSEA team as Director, Labour Relations in July 2021, and has extensive labour and employee relations experience including Senior HR Manager at UBC, HR Director for the District of Squamish, Labour Relations Manager/Team Lead for nine years with the BC Nurses’ Union, and an HR Consultant with the City of Vancouver. Sonia has her Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University, a Bachelor of Business Administration, Human Resources Certificate from BCIT and her CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) designation and completed an Executive Coaching Certificate from Royal Roads University in November 2021. Sonia is also a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser University and teaches Labour and Employment Relations. She has taught Human Resources and Labour Relations at BCIT and KPU.
