The International Ensembles are an opportunity for individual improvisers the world over to spend a week workshopping new and new-to-them improv forms. Dozens of performers apply for a handful of spots and work with guest directors to create evening performances live for you, our audience.
This year our TWO INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLES include performers who live in Toronto, Phoenix, San Diego, Calgary, Los Angeles, Portland, New York, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Vancouver, who have toured across Canada, across the US, and internationally, who are writers, actors, directors, musicians and stand up comedians (when they’re not improvising, of course). They are television stars, Artistic Directors of theatres, comedy and theatre award winners, teachers, friends and lovers. They’re also all gifted improvisers, and they’re all here to entertain you.
One thing is certain — the International Ensembles are groups of people who will likely never all work together again. In some cases, you’d have to travel pretty far to see any of them on their home turf. Now you can enjoy all of them, without even leaving your seat.
Proud of You - Vancouver
Proud of You is a sketch and improv group from Vancouver who met their first day of improv class and have been best friends ever since. Performing monthly at Little Mountain Gallery, they end their shows with a fun and flashy improv set incorporating elements of sketch comedy and their undying love for each other. Realism isn’t necessarily Proud of You’s strong suit. Prepare yourself for a cartoon world, packed with silly characters, pratfalls, sassy one-liners, flailing limbs, smooth ragtime jazz and French Stewart impressions. Oh, and friendship.
Virginia Jack - Vancouver / Toronto
Inspired by art house cinema and a penchant for the fantastically bizarre, a Virginia Jack show is brash and compelling. Taking place in one location, this narrative long form piece begins with layered, co-created characters shared by two mischievous performers who don’t even know where the beaten path is.
Shakespeare After Dark - Vancouver
Shakespeare After Dark is the highbrow fusion of Shakespeare served with a side of improvisational mischief. In the first half, you’ll witness a scene from the Bard utterly monkey-wrenched by an utterly punch-drunk cast member leaving the rest of the cast to improvise around them. Then, stick around for the second half where the cast lays the booze aside to serve a straight up Shakespearean tragedy – based on your suggestions. With a genuinely drunken professional actor volunteering every night, no two shows are ever the same. Side-splitting, raucous, and completely interactive, Shakespeare After Dark will blow you away.
