The OrchardKasha Anne and Mitch Smith, the singer/songwriter duo better known as The Orchard, couldn’t have picked a better title for their latest album than The Great Unknown. After making an indelible impression on Canada’s country music scene with their first two records, the Alberta natives instinctively knew heading into their third release that change was imminent.
But what would that change entail? New sounds? A new producer? A new approach to writing and recording? All of the above, as it turns out.
Led by the anthemic first single “Sometimes I Wonder,” The Great Unknown is a cosmic blend of rock, country and pop. It’s a vision the pair had from the beginning of completely ignoring genre definitions and just doing what came naturally. Still, they needed a trusted hand to guide them in the studio, and there was no one better to ask than producer Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Marcus King Band).
The results reveal The Orchard’s true identity for the first time, a songwriting partnership, and band, able to bring together music fans of all types through their fresh and exciting sound.
"Rolling out of the Canadian Rockies and across the prairie Province of Alberta, The Orchard finds its sound in Canadiana. Great tunes, great guitars and great Vocals. This is a real deal, no B.S. band playing real music."- Jim Scott (multi grammy award winning producer/mixer)
Martin KerrInspired by the poetry of Keats and Radiohead, and by his travels to 35 countries, Martin Kerr is a singer-songwriter who transcends time and place, and yet captures the zeitgeist of the 21st Century.
"Won't somebody send an update to my soul?" comes the call from his latest EP, 'The Update'. There is a world-weariness to his lyrics, but infused with just enough hope. Dealing with the disconnect between our online selves and the outside world, between digital distractions and our dreams for the future, his achingly sincere vocal delivery embodies the feelings of millions.
Often compared to the best of the 1970 troubadours - Cat Stevens, James Taylor, John Denver - Martin's anthemic modern-folk connects with listeners of all ages. In true folk tradition, he takehis music to the people wherever he can. Starting at farmer's markets, and offering CDs from his guitar case, his independently released albums have sold 17,000 copies and counting.
Building his career from the streets, one passer-by at a time, he now has a local following of thousands and is able to put on his own shows at major venues. Having recently sold out the 500-seat Festival Place, his next step is the 1800-capacity Winspear Centre on May 24th.
Born and raised in the English countryside, Martin took the long way round to a new home in Canada. While travelling in China he met a Canadian girl, who became his stalker and then later his wife. The bizarre story of their courtship and the songs it spawned form an integral and hilarious part of his live show. With just a guitar (and sometimes a cello accompanist) his brilliant storytelling and soaring vocals are enough to captivate any audience.
Martin's talent has already earned him opening spots with Andy Grammer, Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) and Sean McCann (Great Big Sea). With momentum building, his aim for 2017 is to play at major folk festivals around the world. Expect to see him on some big stages soon.
