Event description

Description

Join us on the West Coast for a retreat in 2-stranded knitting with colour work expert, Faye Kennington, while nestled in a cozy, ocean-level room at the end of a Pacific Ocean surge channel at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Just in time for the cooler weather, come learn how to knit warm and cozy, bright and beautiful 2-stranded knitting. Explore the colour wheel, and the process for selecting your own inspired colour combinations; learn tips for managing tension and floats, and learn how to correct mistakes. Class time will include selecting and beginning a small accessory project.

The retreat will also include a cedar weaving workshop led by local artist Rose Wilson, an optional naturalist-led walk on the Wild Pacific Trail and time to explore the many shops around town, and to knit of course!

Materials:

Yarn custom dyed by Polka Dot Sheep will be provided; participants will need to bring some tools:

  • US 11 (8mm) 16”/40cm circular and double-pointed needles or needle size necessary to obtain gauge.
  • US 10 (6mm) 16”/40cm circular, or 2 sizes smaller than gauge needle;
  • stitch marker;
  • tapestry needle, and
  • pompom maker (optional)

Cedar Weaving:

Learn the art and skill of cedar weaving with Rose and son Brian Wilson of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation. Create a cedar craft while hearing about the many aspects of cedar and grass weaving such as how fibres are prepared.

Weaver Rose Wilson of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation is both self taught and has the traditional teachings from elders in processing materials and creating traditional works of art. Rose works with red and yellow cedar bark and several types of specific grasses to create clothing, hats, baskets which incorporate traditional and meaningful designs that have been passed down through her family for many generations.
