About This Workshop: Each day on the water will be between 7-8 hours giving us a minimum of 14 hours exploring the area. This will be a private charter on a covered boat allowing us to photograph regardless of weather. An open deck area is also available.

Since this is a chartered vessel, we will have the ability to spend as much or, as little time with the subjects we are photographing at our discretion. Our charter is with a whale watching company and this gives us the best opportunity to see marine wildlife. There are several local tour companies on the water each day who share sightings via radio and a marine texting network. This system is extremely beneficial to everyone and maximizes our ability to locate marine wildlife.

During the 2017 season, sightings were abundant including Sea Lions, Seals, Porpoise, Dolphins, Transient Orca (mammal eating), Resident Orca (fish eating) and an extraordinary number of Humpback Whales. Although unusual, the company that we have chartered located 22 different Humpbacks in one single day this past season.

With wildlife, there is never any guarantee. However, if 2017 is any indication, we should have some amazing opportunities. In addition to sea mammals, September & October increases our chances of seeing both black and grizzly bears as they forage the shorelines in preparation for the winter.

Instructors & Participants: This workshop will be restricted to a maximum of 10 guests. Participants should be 16 years of age or older. If a potential participant is under the age of 16, please contact us as this will require approval. The decision to allow participants under the age of 16 is at the sole discretion of the workshop leaders and maybe refused for any reason, without explanation.

We will both be providing photographic instruction during the tour with a focus on assisting the participants and not on boosting our own portfolios. A minimum of 6 participants will be required for this workshop.

Safety: The level of physical activity required for this workshop is minimal but participants must have good balance and the ability to board and disembark a boat. Waves and particularly tidal currents can be strong in this area and this can make the transition between a dock and a boat more difficult.

In compliance with Transport Canada regulations, safety instructions and any required personal safety gear will be provided. Safety of our guests will remain a priority and may dictate locations visited and length of tours. It is rare but still possible that boat tours may be cancelled due to weather/water conditions. No refund or compensation will be provided related to any cancellation that is beyond our control.

Insurance: Course participants are encouraged to obtain trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Cost for insurance is reasonable and could offer reimbursement for weather/illness related cancellation. Stuart has had 2 successful claims for trips delayed due to weather including a trip to Alaska last year. There are several companies that offer coverage with Travel Guard being the company that covered both losses for Stuart. Participants should select a company that best meets their needs.

Workshop Prerequisites & Requirements: This event is open to photographers of all skill levels. Beginner photographers should greatly benefit from having 2 instructors for a maximum 10 participants. Experienced photographers who have a clear understanding of photography can benefit from a private, photography-based tour. Our goal is to not only find wildlife but to also place the boat in the correct light wherever possible unless the safety of the wildlife is at risk. Release of Liability Forms must be reviewed, the terms must be accepted and signatures confirming your acceptance must be provided. Release of Liability Forms representing the “Workshop Leaders” and representing the “Tour Boat Operator” will be considered separate legal documents and participation will be dependent on the acceptance of the Terms & Conditions representing both parties.

Marine Wildlife Regulations: Safety of the wildlife that we see is priority. Maintaining a distance of 100 meters from whales and orca will be maintained wherever possible. Maintaining a distance of 50 meters from other marine mammals will be maintained wherever possible. The boat will not intentionally violate this rule for any reason. Should wildlife approach the boat closer than the distances above, the boat captain will decide whether it is safe to move the vessel to a further distance or to turn off the engines and wait until it is safe to leave. Placing the boat in the travel path of wildlife to purposely have the animal approach closer than the specified distances is also prohibited.
