Description

Join us for the headline concert of the 4th Annual WestCoast Big Band Festival. The concert features two big bands, Vancouver Groove Orchestra and Jazz Connexion, along with special guests: internationally acclaimed saxophonist Campbell Ryga and Rising Star vocalist Maya Rae. Also featuring Brad Turner on trumpet.

Performer Bios

Campbell Ryga

Vancouver-based saxophonist Campbell Ryga has received many awards over the years including three Juno Awards (with two additional nominations) and a Grammy nomination. He appeared on Michael Buble’s recording ‘Crazy Love’ which received a Grammy Award in 2010.

Campbell's career soared on the national scene as a headliner with Moe Koffman, and he has played with everyone from the Hemisphere New Music Ensemble to Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass. He has toured internationally on over two dozen occasions, primarily to Western Europe and to Latin America, and has been invited to perform at the Havana International Jazz Festival for six consecutive years. Campbell is also well known as a founding member of the all-star award-winning Hugh Fraser Quintet.

Maya Rae

Vancouver jazz vocalist Maya Rae is creating buzz with her sold out shows during the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. CBC named Maya one of the “35 best Canadian jazz artists under 35”, calling her “a supremely gifted artist who’s able to phrase like Sarah Vaughan but write a lyric like Joni Mitchell.”

Brad Turner

Trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer Brad Turner is one of Canada’s most in-demand and highly esteemed jazz musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John Scofield, Reneé Rosnes, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Douglas, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Kenny Werner, and Ernie Watts. He is a three-time Juno Award recipient, recognizing his work in the internationally acclaimed electric Jazz group Metalwood. Brad was awarded the 2006 Victor Lynch-Staunton Prize for excellence in musical achievement and was the recipient of the 2014 Vancouver Mayor’s Art Award for Music. Brad has been a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University since 1992.

Vancouver Groove Orchestra

The Vancouver Groove Orchestra is an exciting showband comprised of an expanding pool of remarkable musicians, including several who lead their own musical groups in Vancouver and surrounding areas.As a CRA-approved non-profit society, the VGO is committed to making a difference in people’s lives through great music, fun and participation in various events that contribute to building positive communities.

Jazz Connexion

Jazz Connexion is a big band consisting of a dynamic group of musicians who enjoy all variations of jazz music. Ranging in age from post secondary students to much older, these musicians have a diverse background and are alumni of various continuing music programs, including schools, community bands, colleges, and universities.
