SPEAKER 1: Pamela Robinson, Director and Associate Professor, School of Urban and Regional Planning, Ryerson University.TOPIC: Pamela will discuss the use of Smart City Data in Public Space, Citizen Engagement, Quality of Life, Digital Equity.

SPEAKER 2: Shawn Slack, CIO & Director IT, City of Mississauga

TOPIC: Shawn will discuss the City of Mississauga and Data. How is it currently being used and upcoming plans and ideas for data in the city.

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: The public will be invited to take part in an engagement activity to start to build ideas for SMRTCTY data principles for the City of Mississauga. --

SPEAKER BIOS:

Pamela Robinson, (MCIP, RPP) Director and Associate Professor, School of Urban and Regional Planning, Ryerson University.

Dr. Pamela Robinson MCIP RPP is the Director of the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson. Throughout her career as a planner her research and practice have focused on complex, emergent challenges that Canadian communities face. Her current research focuses on the question: who is planning the Canadian smart city? Since 2010, Pamela has written a regular column for Spacing Magazine where she writes about equity, technology and civic engagement in Canadian cities. Robinson is a member of Waterfront Toronto’s Digital Strategy Advisory Panel, an Advisor on the Toronto Public Library’s Innovation Council and she is a member of the Multi-Stakeholder Forum for the Government of Canada’s Open Government Partnership work.

Shawn Slack, MBA Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer

Shawn Slack is the Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the City of Mississauga, the 6th largest City in Canada.

He led the City’s mandate to provide all City services online, implemented the City’s first Customer Service Strategy, Open Data Policy, Bring Your Own Device Policy and is actively leading the Digital Transformation of city services. Shawn is very active with public safety, in his emergency management role at the City and also working on the Public Safety Broadband Network initiative for the Canadian Government with an objective to implement a public safety cellular network across Canada.

Currently, Shawn is engaged in many great Smart City initiatives guided by the City’s IT Master Plan and Smart City Master Plan that are guiding the City’s digital transformation and a vision to becoming a connected and engaged City.
