Event description

Description

Hugelkultur (mound culture) is a raised bed technique created by Austrian permaculturist Sep Hoelzer, using decomposing wood to increase water holding capacity in the soil, once established these beds require little water and maintenance. A great water smart technique for our climate, when installed appropriately. We will dive into the basics of hugelkultur, design considerations, when and where is it appropriate, maintenance and planting tips and end the day installing a 12ft long bed.

Dress for the weather and to get dirty! Simple tools will be provided.

Instructor Bio:
Matt Gravel is a Victoria based permaculturist with a passion for living and sustainable systems. Captivated by nature and the outdoors at a young age, he comes by this honestly. With 10 years property maintenance and conventional landscaping experience, he became tired of the unsustainable and non-regenerative practices in urban environments and wanted to find a way to change urban spaces. Now Matt operates and small nursery, design and education business; Plant Buoy: Life Preservation Plants and is using this as a platform to empower and teach people low maintenance, easy to manage systems that can grow nutrient dense food and medicine while working with the constraints of nature and regenerating urban landscapes.
