Enter in Causeway's first ever scavenger hunt by bicycle for a chance to win $500!

About this Event

Gear up for Causeway’s first ever scavenger hunt by bike, taking place on Sunday, August 11th! Venture out on your own or as part of a team with your friends and decipher a series of clues that will take you around the city for your chance to win great prizes, all while making a difference in someone’s life! Test your knowledge to solve each clue, share pics of your journey on Instagram and Twitter, and flood the streets of Ottawa with bikes. The best part is that all proceeds go towards supporting people who have barriers to employment like mental illness, disability, and homelessness, to find meaningful and lasting employment.

TO ENTER:

To participate, purchase your event ticket through Eventbrite and commit to raising at least $50 per person for Causeway. Your registration includes a day jam-packed of cycling, clue-solving fun and comes with a free BBQ lunch and snacks at Causeway on event day. Raising at least $50 for Causeway makes you eligible for prizes. All donations support individuals who have barriers to employment, such as a mental illness or disability, in finding meaningful and rewarding work.

SCAVENGER HUNT DETAILS:

At 7pm the night before the hunt, you will receive an email that includes all scavenger hunt clues. This gives you a chance to decipher each clue and plan your bike route around the city.

The official start time of the scavenger hunt is at 9am on Sunday August 11th and you will have until 2pm to reach as many destinations as possible. Choose your own start point and visit the scavenger hunt locations in whatever order you like! At each stop, you must take a photo and post it on Twitter or public Instagram account using the hashtag #CausewayBike and tagging @CausewayWork (Twitter)/@CausewayWorkCentre (Instagram).

Stops can include local businesses, parks, tourist attractions, and landmarks. Certain stops are worth more points than others, which will be indicated on the scavenger hunt list. Some stops will also have optional activities that can be completed for extra points. The team or individual with the most points by 2pm wins our 1st place grand prize of $500! We will announce the winners of our grand prize and top fundraiser prize on Causeway’s social media channels on Monday August 12th and email the winning team/individual.

RULES:

  1. Only bike wheels, not automobiles – you must have at least 1 bike visible in your photos to count.
  2. There is no applause for those who break the laws – you must follow the rules of the road while cycling around the city.
  3. Those that play together, stay together – if on a team, you must stick with your teammates! The majority of your team must be visible in each photo.

IS THERE AN AGE RESTRICTION?

Nope! If you're under 18, please get your parent or guardian to sign the waiver on your behalf!

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE ON MY TEAM?

4 maximum to a team and you must stay together.

BUT HOW WILL YOU KNOW?

Everyone must be in the photo.

HOW DO I MAKE A FACEBOOK FUNDRAISER?

Under your “Create a Post” next to “Feeling/Activity” there are three little horizontal dots, click on them. Scroll down to “Support a Non-Profit,” and start typing CAUSEWAY FOUNDATION. Please keep in mind, that there is also a Causeway Work Centre, and although we are the same organization both working towards the same goal, this fundraiser is being held through the Foundation. You can type some inspirational message, and then you share your fundraiser! Remember to keep sharing throughout the weeks to come!

THE PEOPLE I WANT TO ASK DON’T USE FACEBOOK, IS THERE ANOTHER WAY I CAN FUNDRAISE?

Yes! Once you purchase an event ticket, you will be sent a pledge form so you can collect cash and cheque donations from friends and family. Make sure you fill out all the information so they can be eligible for a tax receipt!

HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD EACH TEAM RAISE?

Each participant commits to raising $50 for Causeway Foundation.* This is in addition to the $20 registration fee that each participant pays. We know you’ll have so much and the money you raise will go directly to helping Causeway’s client find meaningful work and independence. You can choose to pay the full amount now by selecting the $70 option, or pay the $20 registration now and either bring your fundraised amount to Causeway’s BBQ. Of course, you are not limited to raising/donating $50. There will be race advantages given to top fundraising teams/individuals.

*The only exception is when a group is participating, then the minimum amount to raise is the equivalent to $50 per participant. This means that if two people are participating together, and one raises $75 and one raises $25, they can both still participate.

CAN YOU STILL PARTICIPATE IF YOU DON’T RAISE THE MINIMUM $50?

Yes, however, you will no longer be eligible for any of the prizes.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF I RAISED THE $50?

You will need to either come to Causeway Work Centre and show our staff proof of your fundraising (and provide any offline donations you received) or send a screenshot of your fundraising page to hglover@causewayfoundation.org by 2pm on August 11th.

DO YOU GIVE TAX RECEIPTS FOR DONATIONS?

Yes. Paypal Giving issues tax receipts for online donations, and a pledge sheet will be emailed to you upon registration and you that can choose to use that when asking for donations and recording donor information, Causeway will then email a tax receipt to these individuals.

OK BUT LIKE HOW FAR DOES THIS SCAVENGER HUNT GO?

Without giving too much away, the scavenger hunt will not go as west Bayshore Shopping Centre, not as east as Gloucester, and not go as south as South Keys – everything in between is fair game.

AM I LOOKING FOR ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR AT THESE LOCATIONS?

Unless the location is a business where you have to partake in an activity, or a specific monument, you are not going for a treasure hunt just looking for locations.

I KNOW THE EVENT STARTS AT 9AM, BUT CAN I START BIKING EARLIER THAN THAT?

Any images that are clearly posted outside the hours of 9am and 2pm on August 11th will not be counted towards the grant prize.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE DATA?

As this event requires you to post throughout the day, ensure that someone on your team has data, or you will have to rely on free wifi around the city!

WHAT IS THE POSTING CRITERIA?

The photo or video must contain a clear shot of the location and a visible bike. If you are participating as an individual, you may take a selfie or get someone to take a picture of you. If you are participating in a group, the majority of the group members must be visible in the photo.

HOW DO THE EXTRA POINTS WORK?

Some locations will be worth extra points, depending on how far away they are. Other locations will be worth more points if you have to do an activity when you get there. This will be mentioned on the sheet so you know how to plan your route accordingly.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS BBQ?

Between the hours of 12-2, you can stop by Causeway Work Centre for a burger and a snack. This gives you an opportunity to show us your fundraising efforts, play some games for extra points, and eat some lunch. Don’t worry about staying long, we know you’re on an adventure.

I AM A VEGETARIAN, WILL I BE ABLE TO EAT AT THIS BBQ?

Yes, vegetarian burgers will be available – as well as beef burgers and hotdogs. If you have any other dietary restrictions, please email hglover@causewayfoundation.org.

WHY CANT I BE ISSUED A REFUND?

If you are no longer able to attend the event, you are able to give your ticket to someone else, just send us an email with their name and contact number, or you can treat your purchase as a donation and you will be issued a tax receipt.
