Event description

Description

SAWITRI Theatre Group is delighted to remount Where There’s A Will, a two-act play in English at the Alumnae Theatre, Toronto; nine performances from Thursday April 12 to Saturday April 21, 2018.

One of Mahesh Dattani’s earliest plays, Where There’s A Will is a comedy of the drawing room variety, telling the story of a rich, controlling patriarch, Hasmukh Mehta. Despite its comedy, the play offers a poignant and introspective look at women in their own homes being marginalized by patriarchal codes. It confronts issues of authority and identity within a seemingly traditional family. Hasmukh Mehta’s pet peeve is that no one lives up to his expectations. His son Ajit fiercely resists him, refusing to become an extension of his father. Ajit’s wife Preeti, tries to be a dutiful daughter-in-law, and Hasmukh’s wife Sonal, is an insipid woman living in his shadow. On the periphery of this family unit, is Hasmukh’s mistress, Kiran Jhaveri.

The Creative Team remains the same as the 2012 production. Directed by Christina Collins; her seventh production with SAWITRI. Production Design by Joe Pagnan, the amazing new generation designer; Costume Design by Shruti Shah. The production features a cast of five actors, two established, one mid-career and two emerging, new generation artists - David Huband, Maria Syrgiannis, Jasmine Sawant, Siddhant (Sid) Sawant, Carlotta Massoletti. Stage Manager, Jeremy Pearson.
