Event description
Discover the importance of soil surveying and the role it plays in building robust, resilient communities.

About this Event

We may think of it as just dirt, but soil matters. Soil provides nutrients that sustain plants for food and energy. It supplies us with drinking water, regulates excess rainfall and prevents floods. It houses much of the planet’s biodiversity, acts as a buffer against pollutants and much, much more. But despite its importance, detailed, up-to-date soil surveys (that is, geographical representations showing diversity of soil types and/or soil properties) are lacking in many regions of the world. Soil maps and associated data use are important indicators for climate change planning, land use planning and construction and reclamation planning.

Join Dr. Preston Sorenson, guest speaker from the University of Saskatchewan, as he highlights the importance of soil mapping and soil data management, and the role soil surveying plays in building robust, resilient communities.

About the Speaker

Dr. Sorenson is a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the University of Saskatchewan where he conducts digital soil mapping research and helps manage the Saskatchewan Soil Information System (SKSIS). He is also the Chief Science Officer at Maapera Analytics, where he leads the development of data analysis systems to process environmental datasets. He has experience conducting Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, Soil Monitoring Programs and Remediation projects as an environmental consultant prior to founding Maapera Analytics. Preston has a B.Sc. in Land Use and Environmental Studies from the University of Saskatchewan, and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Alberta. Preston specializes in the use of machine learning and geostatistics to solve complex soil data analysis challenges.
