Event description
Mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and help us bridge the digital gender gap in STEM!

About this Event

According to a 2011 study by Wikimedia Foundation, 90 percent of all Wikipedia editors are male. This has led to Wikipedia having fewer and less extensive articles about women or topics that are important to women.

While anyone (with an Internet connection, reliable sources and some time to spare) can edit Wikipedia, the encyclopedia isn’t representative of the diversity we see in the world. In fact, on English Wikipedia, only 18% of pages are about women.

To combat this gender gap, register for the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help improve coverage of women in science.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

This event is free with paid general admission to the Science Centre.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

All are welcome to join us (recommended age 16+). Note that the event is limited to 40 participants. Pre-registration is required.

WHAT DO I BRING?

Please bring your own laptop. Some computers will also be available.

WHERE DO I GO?

Once you’re at the Ontario Science Centre, meet in the HotZone, Level 6.

WHAT PAGES WILL WE UPDATE?

We will provide a target list of Wikipedia pages with a focus on women and individuals belonging to marginalized groups, but we welcome all edit-a-thon attendees to create and/or update pages they are interested in.

WHAT’S THE EVENT FORMAT?

We’ll teach participants about Wikipedia editing in a short crash course, and then we’ll edit Wikipedia together in two structured sessions:

• A 1-hour session to expand current pages

• A final 1 hr 45 min session to create new pages

Schedule:

10:45 a.m. — Registration

11:00 a.m. — Introductory remarks
