Event description

Description

The Ted Rogers School of Management Women in Leadership Association (WiLA) is happy to introduce #WiLAEmpowers: Leadership Diversity in Sports. In this one of a kind event, Masai Ujiri (President, Toronto Raptors) and Teresa Resch (VP Basketball Operations, Toronto Raptors) discuss how their organization has approached diversity and how that has spurred innovation in their workplace.

The sports industry has long been considered an old boys club, but with eleven women in front-office roles—the largest number in the NBA—Masai and Teresa are leading by example and changing the way leadership is approached in sports. This deep-dive into the sports industry is moderated by Marci Ien (Co-anchor, CTV’s The Social), joining us as our host for the evening.

As Masai, Teresa and Marci share best practices and their own insights into the industry, sports fans and industry hopefuls alike are encouraged to come prepared with their own questions. A short Q&A session will be reserved at the end of the evening, preceding a reception and networking session.

Our Guests

Masai Ujiri is a long-time champion for female empowerment in the workplace. His management style does away with quotas and barriers, leaving him time to focus on passion and skills. When it comes down to it, Masai believes, Its inclusion, it’s opportunity, it’s diversity. It just works here. Toronto speaks that. Our organization speaks that.”

Teresa Resch is an MBA graduate from St. Thomas University and a role model for women pursuing careers in male-dominated industries like sports. Teresa worked with the NBA from 2006-11, prior to joining the Raptors. As Teresa’s success at the Raptors has grown, so has her desire to help lead the way for women who want to enter the industry. For her, open discussion around diversity and its diversity of thought is crucial, but empowerment first comes from having both men and women at the table together.

Marci Ien is a Ryerson RTA alumni (‘91) and has been decorated for her professional and philanthropic commitments to equality and human rights—including the African Canadian achievement and Planet Africa awards. Marci’s success as a host spans almost 20 years, from CTV News Atlantic, to Canada AM and now, The Social. Marci has found tremendous success in her work and philanthropy and is excited to share her knowledge and experiences with future business leaders.
