About this Event

MRG Concerts & Painfully Optimistic present Winter Blues: a showcase of local emerging alternative and emo talent.

Indulge your festive melancholy and party like it’s Warped Tour 2003. Four thirty-minute live performances from some of Vancouver’s current bands to watch, followed by an only slightly ironic dance party/sob fest (choose your own adventure) as we storm through some of the most memorable jams of the genre, from Rites of Spring through Fall Out Boy and beyond.

Andrew Phelan

“He’s got a fine line in lyrical storytelling and fills his music with energy, spirit and verve” - Post To Wire

Australian born, Vancouver based singer Andrew Phelan writes close to the chest, and this heartfelt approach to songwriting quickly let him cut a path in the Canadian music scene as the charming front man of Vancouver Folk band The River and The Road.

Since 2012, Andrew has toured Canada multiple times, playing high-profile festivals (Squamish Valley Music Festival, Toronto Urban Roots Festival) and opened for acts such as Shakey Graves and Sam Roberts Band. The River and The Road were nominated for 2015 best breakthrough album of the year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards for their sophomore release “Headlights”.

Since then, Andrew has continued performing as a solo, duo, and trio act, touring Australia, Japan, and Canada, with notable recent performances including SKOOKUM Festival, John Paul White (Civil Wars), Deep Dark Woods, and a cross Canada tour with Vancouver’s Peach Pit. His most recent release “Everything Rattles When I Breathe” Is out now on all music platforms.

Taking prompts from 90’s post-grunge dirge heroes and modern emo revivalists, Altona’s sensible-yet-gutsy approach to songwriting frames, within sturdy arrangements, a zeal for clarity amid devastation. The four-piece prudently fashions music for those blindsided by the dark but fighting to stay in the light.

In July 2016, Altona began what should’ve been a brief hiatus. Following countless member changes and dwindling creative momentum, a general sense of disillusionment arose among remaining members. To top it off, an invitation to play Canadian Music Week didn’t materialize when the band were in a serious car accident en route to Toronto.

So, despite a successful 2015 EP release and Western Canadian touring, the group sank beneath the radar.

Now, three years later, Altona is categorically firing on all cylinders once more. With an album due for release this winter, the Vancouver indie/emo rockers are moving ever-forward with the recent past, vigorous and real, still in their eyeline.

Despite being fresh to the BC scene, Seablush actually have a 3 year history behind them. Originally starting as a project between singer/songwriter Billy Muldoon and guitarist Kyle Goddard, Seablush were born out of their love of bands such as American Football, Turnover and Foxing. Wanting to create an authentic sound, they were joined by equal-mind musician; drummer and multi-instrumentalist Lincoln Woo.

Together they quietly crafted their self-produced debut EP, writing and recording Elizabeth for the majority of 2017 and 2018, and modestly released it into the world in December 2018. Taking influence from the direct emotional songwriting of bands such as City & Colour, as well as impactful buildups, Elizabeth is a striking debut, with rich experimental instrumentals layered with Muldoon’s striking vocals and haunting lyrics.

With just a few local shows under their belt, including with touring American bands Haybaby and Late Bloomer, the band are gearing up to record their debut full-length album in October 2019 with the addition of bassist Alex Myers.

Evan Konrad

Evan Konrad sonically architected an alternative world all by hand. Born and raised in Abbotsford, BC Canada, the singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist devoted his entire life to crafting music. Growing up in a house where creativity would be encouraged at every turn, he spent countless hours writing songs and producing. Following stints recording and on the road with other artists, he locked himself away in the studio and commenced work on what would become his forthcoming debut. With nothing more than a few songs on his private SoundCloud link shared by his manager, he caught the attention of LAVA founder Jason Flom who signed him on the spot—because of the downright mind-blowing songcraft. Now, that songcraft comes to life on his first single “Long Way Out” with its airy beat, haunting vocals, and seesawing chant. The best way to describe the music would be Thom Yorke translating Christopher Nolan’s Memento into songs, and even that only scratches the surface.
