Description

The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg offers 5 scholarships (totaling $10,000) to aspiring instrumentalists and vocalists to further their musical training. The scholarship program has been a feature of the Women’s Musical Club mandate since 1915.

WMC Scholarship - $3000 - Andrea Lett - Soprano

Praised for her “sweet sincerity” and her “clear voice soaring to stratospheric heights” (Opera Canada, 2015) soprano Andrea Lett thrilled to be part of the vibrant music scene in Winnipeg. Originally from Prince Albert SK, Lett finished her undergrad in Music at the University of Manitoba studying with Monica Huisman, and completed her Masters in Opera at the University of Toronto in 2016 studying with Mary Morrison. Andrea was a recent finalist in the Canadian Opera Company’s 2016 Center Stage Gala Competition, and her versatile tone has allotted her a variety of roles- from Cendrillon to Queen of the Night. Upcoming engagements include Santa Fe’s 2017 Young Artist Apprentice Singer Program and Calgary Opera’s 2017/2018 Emerging Artist Program.

WMC Scholarship - $2500 - Kristy Tucker - Bassoon

Kristy Tucker earned a Bachelor’s of Music degree from the University of Manitoba, recently completed her Master’s of Music degree at McGill University and will be continuing her graduate studies at Yale University in the fall of 2017. Winner of numerous competitions, Kristy has been featured as a soloist with the University of Manitoba Wind ensemble twice, and has been awarded such scholarships as: The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg “Holtby" scholarship, Schulich scholarships, and numerous grants from her schools of study. She has been invited to attend summer programs such as the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (2014 & 2015), the Young Artists’ Program at the National Arts Centre, and Scotia Festival of music. Kristy will be returning to NYO Canada for the summer of 2017 as an Award of Excellence fellow.

Madeleine Gauvin Scholarship - $2000 - Paul Williamson - Piano

Paul Williamson is in his third year of studies at the University of Manitoba, pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance under David Moroz. He is a first place winner of both the piano category of the national music festival (2014) and the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association national piano competition (2017). He has performed as soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra, the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and the Fraser Valley Symphony Orchestra with whom he will be a returning performer later in the 2016-2017 season.

Holtby Scholarship - $1500 - Yufei Lui - Violin

Yufei Liu, a violinist, from Beijing-China, is currently studying at the University of Manitoba -Faculty of Music for the Master degree. He started to play violin from age four, and he went to the middle school of Beijing Central conservatory of music in Beijing when he was twelve. In 2009, He went to England to study at Birmingham Conservatoire with full scholarship. He has studied with Oleg Pokhanovski, Susanne Stanzeilet, Chris Anstey, and Ming Jin. He has also had many Master Classes with great musicians for the study of solo playing and chamber music, such as Alina Ibragimova, Maciej Rakowski, Krysia Osostowicz, Leland Chen, Yaoji Lin, Simon Smith, Nathaniel Vallois, Pierre Doumenge, etc.

As a soloist, He has given many recitals and concerts in China, England and Canada. He was the Winner of UM‘s Concerto Competition in 2014 and played Beethoven violin concerto with University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra in 2015. In 2016, Yufei had been invited to perform in the New Year Eve concert in Luo Yang, China.

He is also a very experienced Orchestra Players. He started to play in the China National Youth Orchestra and China national Youth chamber Orchestra from age fifteen to eighteen. And also he was the concertmaster of Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, and Concertmaster of University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra.

Yufei Liu has also played many chamber music. He was the first violin of the vellen ensemble when he was residing in England, they issued an Album of classical chamber music by Haydn and Mozart recorded in January 2013. They were also the finalists of the chamber music competition of Birmingham chamber music society.

Berythe Birse Scholarship - $1000 - Nolan Powell - Guitar

Born in Winnipeg, Nolan displayed passion for music at a young age but became immersed in sport throughout his childhood and teenage years. This pushed music out of the picture and it was not until the age of seventeen that he began to study music and classical guitar seriously. In just a six month period Nolan prepared an audition program for the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba and was accepted to study classical guitar at the undergraduate level. Since then Nolan has completed bachelor degrees in music and education and in the past five years has been a finalist in the annual Lawrence Genser and Concerto competitions at the U of M. Most notably, Nolan has placed second at the FCMF National Competition as a soloist and as a chamber musician with classical guitar group Trio Déz. Nolan was also the 2017 recipient of the Len Hew Trophy and Bursary through the Winnipeg Music Festival and is an active member of the Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society. In the near future, Nolan plans to pursue guitar performance at the graduate level and aspires to one day find a career in line with his passion for pedagogy and music.

The Scholarship Winners perform each year in December, as part of the regular concert season while most students are at home for the holidays. The 2017 concert takes place at the Muriel Richardson Auditorium of the Winnipeg Art Gallery on Thursday, December 28th 2017 at 7 pm. After the performances, awards are presented and individual and group photographs are taken.
