Women in AI - New York: our January WaiTALK will be formatted as a combination webinar and fireside chat. Our speakers will share their wealth of experience across Data Science and Machine Learning, as leaders in AI. Jean will present on the next frontier of Conversational AI and Kay will have a Q&A session with us, as we discuss the Promise of AI and what that means for us in the coming years.
This is the first event of 2021 from Women in AI - New York, join us as we discuss the potential of AI in this new decade so that we can all better understand what the coming decade will have in store for us.

“Frontier in Conversational AI”
Jean Crawford is a theoretical and computational linguist with experience in natural language processing and understanding. Her 12 year academic career crossed both linguistics and psychology, where she conducted research on syntax, semantics, and child language acquisition. At Microsoft's Semantic Machines, Jean and her team have the goal of creating effortless conversation between humans and computers. They are creating new conversational assistant technology based on research on discourse, context awareness, listening, and understanding.
In addition to her speech and dialogue duties - Jean is a D&I advocate, a peer mentor to senior technical females, and has recently spoken at She+ Geeks Out event in Boston on the future of tech in Conversational AI.
“Making Possible the Promise of AI”
Kay Firth-Butterfield is the head of Artificial Intelligence and a member of the Executive Committee at the World Economic Forum, and is one of the foremost experts in the world on the governance of AI. She is a Barrister, former Judge, Professor, technologist and entrepreneur who has an abiding interest in how humanity can equitably benefit from new technologies, especially AI.
An Associate Barrister (Doughty Street Chambers), Master of the Inner Temple, London and serves on the Lord Chief Justice’s Advisory Panel on AI and Law, Kay has-founded AI Global and was the world’s first Chief AI Ethics officer in 2014 and created the #AIEthics twitter hashtag, as well as Vice-Chair of The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, and was part of the group which met at Asilomar to create the Asilomar AI Ethical Principles.
Kay sits on the Polaris Council for the Government Accountability Office (USA), the Advisory Board for UNESCO International Research Centre on AI and AI4All and has advanced degrees in Law and International Relations, regularly speaking to national and global audiences addressing many aspects of the beneficial and challenging technical, economic and social changes arising from the use of AI.
