Women on the Verge
Sat, 13 May 2017, 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM EDT
"Women on the Verge;" Songs sung by women about women on the brink of monumental change in their lives. Sopranos Elizabeth MacDonald and Emily Martin with Pianist Kathryn Tremills in concert singing Hugo Wolf's Mignon, Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben , and contemporary composer Libby Larsen's Try Me Good King: The Last Words of the Wives of Henry VIII. This is a program that begins with abduction, exploitation and longing, moves to a woman's commitment to love, and leading us to the very words uttered by Henry VIII's beleaguered queens as they faced execution, all presented in music.
These songs require profound control of voice and dramatic intention on the part of the singer and exquisitely sensitive mastery at the piano. Singer and pianist come to speak as one to deliver the drama, wit, and emotional intensity that mark the common and uncommon experience of all women. Presenting Art Song at its most complex, "Women on the Verge" brings together three highly accomplished veterans of opera stages and concert halls in Canada and the USA in the intense collaboration that defines the genre. After the concert, join the artists for conversation and fun music- making at the Black Dog, Stirling ON. It will be an evening to remember and you don't want to miss it! Tickets at $15.00 are heavily subsidized by QSCM. Bring a friend!
