Speakers

Bisa Myles - Women Who Explore

Bisa Myles was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. She is a plus-size adventure traveler, freelance writer, travel blogger, and a breast cancer survivor. Bisa didn’t participate in many activities as a child because she was shy and felt self-conscious about her weight.

As an adult she was more confident and outgoing. She enjoyed doing adventurous things like, skydiving, zip-lining and bike riding.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she lost her confidence. When she received her survivorship plan from the doctor that included dozens of test and scans over a five year period, she decided to create a different plan filled with travel and experiences. She calls it her survivor's list. Bisa documents her life and travels on her blog Myles To Travel. Her goal is to inspire others through her writing and photography to pursue their dreams despite their size or diagnosis.

In March 2019, she hiked Mount Kilimanjaro with 20 plus-sized women. A documentary about their climb is due out later this year. She is also one of the Ambassadors of the Women Who Explore Greater Chicago Area chapter.

She will be talking about how hiking and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro helped her face her fears and heal.

Hatie Parmeter - Whoa Magazine

Hatie Parmeter is a Midwestern outdoor writer and educator. She is the founder of Whoa Mag - Women of Heart and Outdoor Adventure Magaine - an online publication written by and for women who love the outdoors.

Hatie will be speaking about relearning the definition of a hike and getting outdoors with chronic illness.

Coach Denise - Marathon Whisperer

Fresh off of completing the Everest Marathon and Comrades Ultramarathon, Coach Denise is a huge believer in doing things that you are afraid of in and out of sports. She calls it SCITED: those moments that you do something that you are SCARED and EXCITED about. That is when you find out what else you have inside of you that was just waiting to come out. It is all part of the human experience. We can't short change ourselves and let fear win. Denise found her first dose of confidence after running the Chicago Marathon in 1994. That SCITED finish line turned the, "I can't!" into "What else can I do?!!" Denise mistakenly thought marathons were just for fast people. Her sister and running partner Debbie shattered that myth when Debbie ran Chicago in 1993. Debbie was and still is her inspiration.

Denise has gone on to do more SCITED things, like finish an Ironman even though she is deathly afraid of open water, skydive in Sydney and bungee jump in New Zealand even though she is deathly afraid of heights and most recently, she left her 26 year career (De-Corporated) to become a full time running coach and Marathon Whisperer. Denise founded Run For Change Coaching back in 2010 after surviving a near fatal car accident. Last fall, she published her first book, "Me, You & 26.2-Coach Denise's Guide to Get YOU to YOUR First Marathon".
