Learn woodworking theory and get advice on projects

About this event

WoodLab 201 covers the principles of basic woodworking techniques and the knowledge needed to build something properly to last. This is primarily a theory based class with some instruction taking place in the WoodLab.

Students are encouraged to bring woodworking project ideas as the last part of the class will be reserved for getting help and advice from the instructor on specific projects they would like to complete.

Students will learn:

  • How to choose the right type of wood for your project (Hardwood vs. Softwood)

  • How to choose the right type of screws

  • How to cut a mortise and tenon joint

  • Basic overview of different types of wood joints

  • When to use biscuits, brad nails and wood glue

  • How much glue to use, clamping, and how long to leave a project

  • Finishing

WoodLab 101 is a recommended pre-requisite to this class.

Please note, due to COVID-19, we have implemented the following policies:

  • Following public health orders, as of September 13th, all participants will be required to have a vaccine passport in order to attend this class.
  • It is recommended that everyone sanitize their hands upon entering the building
  • Masks must be worn for the duration of the class. Everyone is required to bring their own masks.
  • Students must bring their own safety glasses or they will be available for purchase at the front desk for $5.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The minimum age for participants is 13 years old with a participating guardian or 18 otherwise.  

What are my parking options at MakerLabs?

MakerLabs' parking lot is located on the east side of the building on the corner of Hawks Avenue and East Cordova Street.

Can I sign up for the member rate?

The member rate is only for members of MakerLabs. If you sign up for a membership on the day of the class, you'll receive a refund for the difference between the general and membership class price.

How do I cancel or reschedule my class?

Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees), credits for future classes and orientations, or transferring a ticket to a future date, will only be provided if we are notified by email to hello@makerlabs.com at least 24 hours in advance of the class. For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice.

What happens if I show up late?

Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the class so that it can start on time. Attendees arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be allowed in the class.
