About Tom Rachman

With the publication of his first novel The Imperfectionists, Canadian writer Tom Rachman became an international publishing sensation. A wry and wise tale about the misadventures of reporters, editors and executives for a struggling English-language newspaper based in Rome, the Globe and Mail called The Imperfectionists “near flawless…” while Christopher Buckley, writing in the New York Times, said that “[the novel] is so good I had to read it twice simply to figure out how he pulled it off.” The Imperfectionists went on to become an international bestseller and was longlisted for the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Rachman followed his impressive debut with The Rise and Fall of Great Powers, the powerful account of one woman’s unexpected journey of self- discovery. The Time of Londonproclaimed the book “mesmerizing: a thorough workout for the head and heart.” The Vancouver Sun declared that “Tom Rachman has done it again…The Rise and Fall of Great Powers has everything that classic novels have – a cast of intriguing and unique characters, a compelling storyline and laser-sharp insights into humanity,” while the BBC raved that “[the novel] has it all. It’s clever, funny and I guarantee you will keep turning the pages.”

Tom Rachman was born in London in 1974 and raised in Vancouver. He attended the University of Toronto and Columbia Journalism School, then worked as a journalist for the Associated Press in New York and Rome and for the International Herald Tribune in Paris. He lives in London.

About the Italian Teacher

At the centre of the action is Pinch Bavinsky. Conceived while his father, Bear, cavorted around Rome in the 1950s, Pinch learns quickly that Bear’s genius trumps all. After Bear abandons his family, Pinch strives to make himself worthy of his father’s attention – first trying to be a painter himself; then resolving to write his father’s biography; eventually settling, disillusioned, into a job as an Italian teacher in London. But when Bear dies, Pinch hatches an improbably scheme to secure his father’s legacy – and make his own mark on the world.
