Event description
This 1-day ISTDP workshop will cover how and why to focus in the transference with fragile patients

About this event

Learning and developing expertise in ISTDP involves working with the unconscious dynamics that manifest in the here and now of the therapeutic relationship (transference). Complex feelings, anxiety and defenses related to patients’ attachment history, unwittingly become transferred onto the therapist. This offers an opportunity in treatment to help patients work through these feelings, to resolve the crippling effects of unconscious anxiety and habitual emotional avoidance. However, this requires a therapist to learn how to mobilise complex transference feelings, allowing them to become more accessible for experiencing and expression. Rather than starting off as an intuitive process, therapists will need to carefully hone this skill and learn to tolerate being the lightning rod for patients’ complex feelings.

Part 2: This second 1-day training will focus on how to work in the transference using ISTDP, for patients with fragile character structure, to gradually mobilise unconscious attachment feelings. Fragile patients have access to a range of primitive defences and unconscious anxiety in the form of cognitive perceptual disruption. Working in the transference helps to interrupt a split dialectic in which primitive defences such a projection, splitting, and projective identification occur. The here and now of the therapeutic relationship offers an ideal environment to contain these processes, in doing so establish a conscious working alliance. Next, helping the patient to first become aware of, and then experience the complex emotions being triggered in the transference, helps the patient to understand and begin to heal the effects of attachment trauma.

Due to the use of video-based teaching material, participants need to have completed or are participating in an ISTDP/EDT core training program, or are ISTDP/EDT trainers, or there assoiates. Please check with organisers.
