Working it Out: Exercise and Recovery
Event Information
About this event
This session is designed to offer a nuanced look at how we move our bodies. Moving beyond polarized understandings of exercise as completely off the table or as a uniformly good idea, we will dive deep into the grey areas.
We’ll explore questions like:
• What is “normal” exercise in a world where we hear about “no pain no gain” and “no excuses”?
• Where does movement fit into the various understandings of eating disorder recovery?
• How do you know if, when, and what movement is right for you?
• How can you offer yourself compassion when you move or have moved in a way that hasn’t been in your best interests?
• What kind of support can you get to help you figure out the wild west of exercise?
• What could eating disorder therapists and programs do to better support people in exploring their relationships with movement?
About the Facilitator
This discussion will be facilitated by Andrea LaMarre, PhD. Andrea is a lecturer in critical health psychology at Massey University (New Zealand). She researches eating disorders, with a particular emphasis on recovery. In this discussion, Andrea will draw on research knowledge and her own personal experiences to facilitate a lively discussion about the ins and outs, ups and downs of living in a body in a world bent on telling us what to do with bodies.
Please note that Andrea is not a clinical psychologist, and the session is led by lived experience rather than clinical expertise and not designed to be a substitute for medical advice or therapy.
