Changes to our provincial government may cause uncertainty and apprehension by non-profit organizations. Honing your understanding of how government works, how to build positive relationships with government, and how to communicate about your work in a way that is congruent with government priorities is a good starting place to minimize these concerns.

Workshop Overview

United Way’s Learning Centre is pleased to partner with Dr. Andrea Rounce and Dr. Karine Levasseur to bring you the Working with Government: A Refresher. This one-day session will give former participants of the Working with Government workshop series an opportunity to come together to revisit key ideas from the three previous workshops. Participants will take part in a half day refresher on how government works and key points for designing a government relations strategy for your organization and the public. The second part of the day will be devoted to small group sessions with the facilitators to provide targeted direction and answer participant identified questions.

The workshop will help participants to continue to build knowledge in the following areas:

  • Understand the key people, institutions, and processes that make up Manitoba’s governmental system;
  • Understand the government’s agenda;
  • Refresh your understanding of how and when to communicate with, and to whom, in government; and
  • Become re-familiarized with different ways to ‘frame’ your organization’s public policy issues.

About the Facilitators

Karine Levasseur, Ph.D

Karine is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba. She earned her PhD. in the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University. While Karine has many research interests, she is particularly interested in how governments in Canada relate (or do not relate) to voluntary organizations. Her research explores how voluntary organizations can become more meaningfully involved in public policy development, and not just resigned to implement public policy decisions made without their involvement.

Andrea Rounce, Ph.D

Andrea is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba. She teaches and researches in public administration. A primary focus of Andrea’s research is government's use of public opinion research and consultation; public sector governance; and research methodology. Emphasizing the need to bridge theory and practice, Andrea also works with public sector organizations on policy and governance issues while working collaboratively on community engagement and education projects around elections and voting.
