Working with Newcomers - Understanding Pre-migration and Trauma

This workshop series will focus on giving a better understanding of the premigration experience of immigrants and refugees, the challenges they face as they settle in Canada and the impact of Trauma and PTSD. Participants will learn simple strategies to work with newcomer families and to support their resilience and integration.
Modules 1 & 2 ( Feb 10 and 11, 9:30 to 11 am):
Premigration Experiences, Impact and Cultural Influences in Newcomer Families
This workshop gives a view into the lives of refugees before their arrival in Canada, what the environment of a refugee camp is like and how these experiences can influence peoples lives.
You will also learn about the different ways people come to Canada and the consequences of different immigration status as well as the influence of culture and pre-migration experiences on the daily lives of refugees.
• Pre-migration experiences of refugees and their impact
- Immigration Status and it's impact on newcomers
• Behavioral adaptations resulting from these experiences
• Role changes in newcomer families and resulting parenting issues
• Influence of culture and connections to the country of origin
Strategies to increase communication and effective cross cultural work
The workshop comprises of 2 modules on consecutive days, each lasting 1.5 hours. The cost is CDN 20 per module, registrations for both modules only.
Modules 3 & 4 (Feb 17 and 18, 9:30 to 11 am):
Trauma, PTSD and Vicarious Trauma
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder often accompanies people who have to flee violent situations - whether as refugees or survivors of domestic violence . This workshop gives an understanding on how trauma develops and an overview over signs and symptoms
You will learn simple strategies to support resilience and work more effectively with survivors of traumatic situations. We also will discuss vicarious trauma and how to take care of yourself .
• The development and effects of trauma in the brain and nervous system
- Understanding symptoms and behaviors
• Skills to work with people affected by trauma.
• Vicarious trauma and how to take care of yourself
