Event description

Description

There is a cost of caring for others in emotional pain. Burnout and empathy fatigue are normal consequences of the vital work that helping professionals engage in. Professional caregivers can be defined as individuals whose career it is to alleviate the suffering of those in need, this includes professionals working in healthcare, education, emergency services, criminal justice and social services.

As professional caregivers there are evidence-based ways for us to enhance our resilience and career longevity. Using the methodologies of mindfulness, mindfulness meditation, and compassion we will explore a practice that promotes health, wellness and resiliency in professional caregivers. To begin, we will explore a variety of motivational “myths” that drive professionals in their unrelenting dedication to those in their care. This includes concepts experienced by many professional caregivers of “giving until it hurts” which is a sacrificial approach that leaves them feeling diminished and depleted. We will highlight evidence that links best outcomes for those in our care to the well-being and resilience of professional caregivers. We will delve into alternative “ways of being” including the use of mindful awareness of body, emotions, thoughts, behaviours and relationships associated with the professional caregiver role. We will explore both the practice of self -compassion and compassion, considering their difference. Drawing upon neuroscience and theories of the social brain, we will explore a variety of ways to enhance professional caregivers abilities to continue the long-term work of supporting themselves and those in their care.

NOTE:

Insurance Coverage: If you have third-party insurance, it may cover all or part of the cost of a therapeutic course. We recommend that you contact your insurance provider to confirm what health professions your plan covers (e.g. Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Naturopath) and that this coverage includes the types of therapies in question (sometimes there are restrictions on the particular services covered by a given health profession).
