Event Details

If McLuhan was a Spinster and Massaging the Non-Human with Ganaele Langlois and Radhika Gajjala

These two workshops explore issues in medium theory from a practice-based and feminist, subaltern studies perspective as the body merges with old and new technology in the production of material artefacts. Specifically, we will focus on the intersections between gender, subalternity, politics of aesthetics, domestic labor, non-human communication, global north and global south, materiality, ngoization and digitality in the case of one of the oldest media in existence: hand-spun, hand-dyed and handloom produced textile.

In order to think through various conceptual categories introduced in discussion and lecture, workshop participants (max. 12) will be introduced two important textile techniques – hand (top whorl spindle) spinning of wool and natural indigo dyeing. Participants will be asked to discuss and journal about their experiences in connection with the key conceptual frames that the workshop leaders suggest.

A small list of suggested readings will be provided prior to the workshop.  The workshop will take place at the Contemporary Textile Studio Co-Op in Toronto.

The Workshop will culminate in a Monday Night Seminar the following evening at the McLuhan Centre with Ganaele Langlois, Radhika Gajjala and Dori Tunstall.
