Description

Learn with IWA is an initiative of the Immigrant Writers Association, which helps its members to enhance their writing skills, gain knowledge about the Canadian publishing landscape, and advance their careers. IWA also encourages its members and other immigrants to share the expertise they brought along, their culture, and thoughts to enrich the society they live in.

World as Character is the second in the Writing and Publishing workshops series, a project which is part of the Learn with IWA initiative.

Writing and Publishing is a series of 10 workshops presented by Nina Munteanu, a writing lecturer at the University of Toronto and George Brown College (also an IWA member).

The second workshop in this series – World as Character - is structured as an hour-long lecture followed by discussions pertinent to the topic, such as the role of setting and world in the story, the use of “place” through metaphor and symbolism to provide the heart of a story.

What this workshop will cover:

  • Tools to increase the richness and meaning of your story, since the setting is best described as a character, defining and interacting with all other characters related to the theme.
  • Ways to integrate setting with plot, theme, and character to provide depth and to ground the reader in context and meaning, considering that too often settings are either too vague or not enmeshed in the story.
  • Methods to use setting to draw readers into the story through metaphor, sensual description, integration and interaction with character and plot.
  • Discussions about the role of POV characters to create a meaningful story and memorable characters.

Nina Munteanu is a Canadian ecologist/ limnologist and internationally published author of award-nominated speculative and eco-fiction novels, short stories and non-fiction. She is co-editor of Europa SF and served as acquisition and structural editor of several anthologies. Nina has taught writing since 2005 and has also been a writing coach and editor since. She has worked with novice and established writers toward successful publication. Nina's latest book is “Water Is…” a scientific study and personal journey as limnologist, mother, teacher, and environmentalist. “Water Is…” was recently picked by Margaret Atwood in the NY Times as her #1 choice in the 2016 ‘The Year in Reading’.
