Writing Compelling Commentary
Tue, 2 May 2017, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM ADT
This highly interactive workshop builds women’s leadership capacity and enhances their credibility and influence by providing participants with the confidence and tools to contribute their expertise to the public discourse through compelling, short-form written commentary for newspaper op ed pages and online sites. The session equips women to:
- Own and articulate their authority as experts (recognizing and addressing the entrenched undervaluing of women’s expertise by both society and women themselves);
- Understand the essential elements and format of newspaper commentaries, including how to build a concise, persuasive and accessible argument;
- Increase their publication prospects by linking their expertise to the news and enhancing the relevancy and timeliness of their knowledge;
- Correspond and work with editors and journalists in general.
This workshop is being run by Shari Graydon. Shari is an award-winning author, advocate and speaker. She founded and leads Informed Opinions, a non profit project that's amplifying women's voices. She has helped hundreds of women across Canada to gain media profile, positioning themselves as experts. A former newspaper columnist, and commentator for CBC radio and TV, she also served as press secretary to a provincial premier, and as president of MediaWatch. Shari has written two best-selling kids' books, received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons’ Case, and been named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by WXN.
