In this workshop, two award winning multi-published authors, Jackie Bateman and Eileen Cook, discuss what makes a novel YA.

About this Event

The North Shore Writers Festival presents Writing for Young Adults with Eileen Cook and Jackie Bateman.

In this workshop Jackie Bateman and Eileen Cook discuss what makes a novel YA. They will break down authentic characters, storytelling, and world-building for everything from contemporary stories to dystopian.

Bring your questions, be ready to hear about this exciting market, and take home prompts and new ideas to get you writing. The session will be moderated by Sonia Garrett of the North Shore Writers Association.

About Jackie Bateman:

Jackie Bateman is a writer, director, and composer. She was raised in Kenya, worked in the UK, and eventually found home in Canada in 2003. She has published three award-winning novels: a character-driven, psychological suspense trilogy set in Scotland. Jackie is the writer and director for two short films: Property was a finalist for the Single Take Challenge 2020, and A Parallel Life will be screened at Minute Madness Toronto in Jan 2021. She is also developing a short film series called 3-Line Stories about B.C.’s memorial benches and their eulogies.

Jackie's first feature screenplay Salome Magic was a final selection at the Vancouver Women in Film Festival screenplay contest 2019.

As North Vancouver Recreation and Culture's first Artist in Residence, Jackie hosted a series of writing workshops that provided storytellers with a safe space to hone their craft. She also works as a freelance copywriter, working with clients such as BC Liquor Stores, lululemon, BCIT and the BC Ministry of Advanced Education.

About Eileen Cook:

Eileen Cook is a multi-published, award winning author with her novels appearing in nine languages. Her books have been optioned for film and TV. She spent most of her teen years wishing she were someone else or somewhere else, which is great training for a writer. She’s an instructor/mentor with The Creative Academy and Simon Fraser University Writer’s Studio Program where she loves helping other writers find their unique story to tell. Eileen lives in North Vancouver with two very naughty dogs.
