Event description

Description

Author and journalist Ellin Bessner will discuss her new book, Double Threat: Canadian Jews, the Military, and World War II. It reveals how 17,000 Canadian Jews donned a uniform in WWII. They fought and died in all the major battles, and they had a double reason to enlist: they weren't only fighting for freedom and democracy, but were also trying to save the Jews of Europe from Hitler's Final Solution.

Ellin Bessner is a professor of journalism at Centennial College in Toronto. She has been a reporter and anchor for CBC News and CTV News. She spent nearly a decade as a business news anchor for Report on Business Television. Ellin spent six years as a foreign correspondent based in Rome, Italy, where - aside from reporting on the Mafia, Italian food, fashion, Opera, and of course, Italian soccer - Ellin also covered several brutal civil wars in Africa. She’s interviewed Prince Phillip (he's interviewed her, actually!), the late Rob Ford, and the Dalai Lama.
