The Cause

Youth Action Now is a group of aware and engaged young people (and their supporters) dedicated to making positive change in our community.

Youth Action Now is Paul Dewar’s legacy initiative and aims to unleash young people’s power through support to grassroots action and collective leadership.

In our first year, we’ve successfully attracted a wide variety of community support and engaged an ever-growing circle of dynamic, diverse young people who are actively working to build better communities, a more equitable country, and a more just world.

This June marks the one-year anniversary of the launch of Youth Action Now. This event is intended to help us kick-off — and assure continued funding for — our new grant program Start Up Nowalong with our mentorship program.

The Concept

We want to build on Paul’s final message — and specifically his invitation to:

SMILE AND PLAY…

LAUGH AND DANCE…

GIVE AND SHARE…

So, we’re hosting an indoor-outdoor dance party and celebration that bridges generations and communities, taking full advantage of Ottawans’ pent-up passion for patio parties on an early summer’s evening. We’re planning a fun evening with great music, great camaraderie and great vibes.

The Crowd

We’re gathering movers and shakers of every stripe and description — friends and fans of Paul, of politics, of vital communities and of solid beats. Young and young-at-heart, we’ll bring together folks from diverse backgrounds and perspectives who are active in our community and who share our confidence in the power of young people to make a difference.

The Venue

Movers and Shakers is being held at Beyond the Pale Brewing Co. at 250 City Centre. We’ll have a stage and expanded, licensed patio/dance area outside — with room inside for those who wanting some distance from the band(!) and an indoor event space in the event it rains.

The venue is close to downtown and offers parking and ready access to bike trails and transit.

Shane Clark and the crew at Beyond the Pale are pulling out all the stops for us and we’re excited to be collaborating with them on this event.

The Music

Ottawa’s own MonkeyJunk will be the headliners. Playing tunes from their Juno-award winning 2018 Blues Album of the Year and classic hits spanning decades, they’re guaranteed to get you moving and shaking. So, bring your dancing shoes — or just sit back, tap your toes and enjoy the music.

As well, Fruit, Star, Candy Bar — Ottawa’s hottest new dance party — will be spinning good energy. This trio of young Black queer DJs — JUICE, Celestial and DJ Trinidaddy — will mix it up with old school and new era rap, throwbacks, soca, hip hop, top 40s, reggae, afrobeats and much more.

We'll also have the Philippine Dance Troupe of Ottawa and Moov Ottawa show us some awesome cool dance moves! The Philippine Dance Troupe of Ottawa will show us how to Tinikling, Binasuan and Cha-Cha, while Moov Ottawa will give us an awesome Hip-hop demo!

The Profferings

The folk at Beyond the Pale will be offering their seasonal mix of finely crafted ales and beers, as well as cider, wine, cocktails and other beverages. Non-alcoholic offerings will be readily on hand.

Teaming up with Smoquehouse, we’ll also have a wide range of delicious smoky, summer-y appetizers, salads and sandwiches. You can order snacks or a full meal – with vegan and vegetarian options, and something for those who eat gluten-free.

The Date

Thursday 20 June is the eve of the summer solstice. It’s also the night before the start of the Ottawa Jazz Festival, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival — and the official start of Ottawa’s summer.

It’s the perfect night for a patio party — so we’re starting at 6:00 PM, encouraging folk to come directly from work — and going strong ’til midnight.
