Event description
Yarn Dyeing: Hand painting yarn the fun way using "easy" acid dyes, with Instructor Susan Chamberlain of Riverstone Yarns.

About this Event

This workshop is suitable to beginners and is not an in depth class on color theory. It is a great opportunity to try hand dye.

In this three hour workshop you will hand paint two skeins of super wash merino sport weight yarn, using two different techniques, learning how to apply acid dyes safely and to create a yarn that is uniquely yours.

At the beginning of class there will be a brief introduction into the world ofdyeing, a discussion of handling dyes safely and presentation of examplesof hand dyed yarns and knitted samples.

First technique: we will apply dyes to a cake of sport weight yarn with the goal of creating a gradient effect. Using liquid, ready to use acid dyes, we paint our yarn cake using condiment squeeze bottles, working from the centre to the outside. If we are careful, we will achieve a gradient effect.

This method gives us some control but be ready for some fun surprises when we re-skein the yarn.

While our first skein of yarn is being steamed in the microwave, setting the color, we will start dyeing our second skein. Second technique: we will hand paint a skein of sport weight yarn to create a variegated yarn, either by dyeing across the skein or around the skein. What does dyeing across or around the skein mean? This method gives us more control than the first technique. After opening our skein into an oval, dyes are applied in patches, long or short, dyer’s choice.

Once our second skein is ready to steam, we can discuss more techniques and look at samples of knitted hand dyed yarn.

Handouts will include;

* Resources for dyes and yarns.

* Yarn tags that state fibre contents and yardages

* How to mix your own dyes at home

* Safety reminders

* Color inspiration and guides

All techniques will be demonstrated first to guide participants in achieving their goals.

No experience is necessary. All materials will be provided including; a wide palette of acid dyes and super wash wool yarn that are ready to work with.
