Event description

Description

Despite a societal shift toward the de-stigmatization of mental health, both our First Responder communities and our general communities at large are still experiencing the devastating effects of suicide, and mental illness. As we seek answers following a tragedy, we’re collectively left struggling to comprehend the actions of our loved ones or respected colleagues.

First Responders, Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, Paramedics, Military personnel, Corrections Officers, 911 Dispatchers, and a host of other related industries are routinely exposed to both direct and vicarious (experienced through others) trauma. It is during a time of crisis that response workers are at their best, but what happens to the helpers when they are done helping?

On September 12, 2017 (In Edmonton), Legacy Place Society www.legacyplacesociety.com in collaboration with the Edmonton Police Service, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Alberta Health Services, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local Military membership, will be co-hosting the "YEG First Responder/Military Personnel Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Conference" in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day.

This Conference is an opportunity for all first responders from police, fire, EMS, 9-1-1, military, corrections, peace officers, sheriffs, fish and wildlife officers, commercial vehicle enforcement, animal and bylaw officers, security personnel, and frontline medical workers and their families to come together in one place to remember the people we have lost to suicide, recognize many today are still suffering in silence, and identify what we can do as a collective to build resiliency and healthy workplaces through awareness and education.

First responders are key stakeholders for our safe and healthy communities, and often fail to recognize they too also require support and care to ensure their health for a long career as well as life after their service.

Please join us this year to learn more about the topic of suicide, the most common concerns around mental health and addictions, how to build resiliency in today's fast-paced world and be a part of the network that is promoting understanding and compassion to reduce stigma and foster hope.

When the “I” is taken out of illness and replacing it with “We”, together it contributes to empowering wellness for the individual and family.

Edmonton Police Service Chief Rod Knecht - "I strongly support the collaborative efforts with the First Responder and Military Personnel Mental Health/Suicide Awareness Conference on September 12th in Edmonton".

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Fire Chief Ken G. Block - "The challenges around the subject of suicide and mental health can be numbing. I welcome this event and encourage attendance."
