Yiddish is far from “dead” or “dying,” with many exciting new developments in the Yiddish language and culture since the beginning of the new millennium. This symposium brings together international scholars to present their research on areas of innovation in Yiddish since the year 2000.
Saturday evening begins with an opening session at Library and Archives from 7:30-9:30 pm and a performance talk on "YIddish and Judeo-Spanish Songs" by Dr. Judith Cohen of York University.
Sunday offers a full day of lectures about Yiddish language and culture at the Univeristy of Ottawa. It features researchers from Canada, the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Israel presenting sessions on Yiddish language learning, Yiddish in the Ultra Orthodox (Hassidic) world, Yiddish digitization and oral history, contemporary Yiddish literature and film, Yiddish translation, and new Yiddish performance.
