Part 1 - The Neurobiology of Yoga Posture Practice: Yoga to Widen the Window of Tolerance and Build Greater Nervous System Resilience

In this workshop, we will explore the brain and the autonomic nervous system and discuss how yoga opens up the nervous system’s “Window of Tolerance” and builds greater resilience. We’ll also experience specific yoga practices that help build greater resilience and improve function. The morning practice will demonstrate how to use and sequence practices to create a safe, sustainable energizing effect on the nervous system. The accompanying evening practice will demonstrate how to create a grounding effect.

Part 2 - The Neurobiology of Yoga Posture Practice: Yoga to Improve Body Awareness

In this workshop, we will look at cutting-edge neuroscientific research which suggests that slow, mindful movement is important for health and offers benefits that differ from those of fitness-oriented exercise. We will discuss the neurobiological mechanisms of body awareness or interoception and how yoga practice can help build this skill. The morning practice will demonstrate how to use your own hands in posture practice to build interoceptive skills. The accompanying evening practice will focus on innovating cues to cultivate greater interoceptive awareness through yoga practice.

Part 3 - The Neurobiology of Yoga Posture Practice: Hemispheric Integration and Optimizing the Brain

In this workshop, we will explore specific practices to benefit hemispheric integration – the ability of the brain to communicate optimally across the fibrous midline connection called the corpus callosum. We will also look at how slow, mindful yoga practices create changes in the brain and examine the 5 Subtle®Yoga Principles of Asana Practice to Elicit Neuroplasticity. During the morning practice, we will experience specific postures to improve hemispheric integration. In the afternoon practice, we will continue to explore practices that encourage hemispheric integration and optimize brain function.

Part 4 – The Neurobiology of Yoga: Pranayama, Meditation, and Ethics

Yoga is more than posture practice and there are numerous evidence-informed neurobiological benefits available via the wide range of breathing, meditation, and ethical inquiry practices of the yoga tradition. In this workshop, we will explore the neuroscience of these other aspects of yoga and look at the researched benefits. During the morning practice, we will explore an integrated practice using ethical inquiry, asanas, interoceptive pranayama, and meditation. In the evening practice we will use the tools of yoga to look beyond the interoceptive experience toward identity, meaning, and purpose.
