Event description

Description

On February 15, join Nigel Walker and Rainbow Haven for an evening of movement, connection and community as we raise money to sponsor a queer refugee whose life is in imminent danger.

Today, millions of LGBTQ people are living desperate lives in countries where their own government or society sees them as criminals simply for being who they are. In too many countries, LGBTQ people face government-sanctioned torture and imprisonment. In many more than that, it is impossible for queer couples to live openly. Forced to exist in isolation and secrecy, individuals may go their whole lives without ever being able to truly be themselves.

It may take decades to change the laws and attitudes of these countries—but in the meantime, our collective effort can do something tangible to help. The funds we raise will enable a queer refugee to settle in Ottawa and find the dignity, respect and love that come with living freely.

On February 15, the good you do for yourself through your practice will spread outward to change the life of a person in desperate need. It might be the most important yoga class you’ll ever take.

FAQS

1) How many tickets are available?

Approximately 200 tickets are available. This is likely to sell out in advance so we encourage you to get your ticket ASAP.

2) What is Silent Yoga?

Silent Yoga is not in fact silent - it's a yoga class where the students wear glowing headsets and the teacher's voice and music are funnelled directly into their ears. It's an immersive and intimate experience!

3) What level of practice will the yoga class be open to?

This will be an all-levels flow yoga class, with emphasis on providing options and variations for different body shapes and abilities. You may wish to bring your own props such as blocks or blankets if you prefer to have those available.

4) Where does the money go?

Once we collect the funds and deduct expenses such as space rental, equipment and sound technicians, all funds are donated directly to the charity that is sponsoring the refugee. If you prefer to make a direct donation please contact nigel@nigelwalker.ca
