About this Event
ABOUT THIS EVENT:
Take a proactive approach to your mental health and join us on January 26th at 4 pm PST to show your brain and body some love. Join UFV alumnus, Michaela Reist, in a workshop on mental health for Bell Let’s Talk week.
The workshop will go over techniques on how to sit presently with your mind without pushing away your experience, understanding why mental patterns occur and how to redirect habits that are not serving you, body scanning for areas of physical tension which can signal distress and anxiety to your brain, and how to use simple physical body hacks to bring a greater state of relaxation and ease.
No experience is necessary and all skill levels will be given appropriate variations. The only things you will need are a yoga mat (a blanket or towel are fine if you do not have one), a blanket, a water bottle and an optional notebook.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
This hour-long online workshop will consist of gentle movement, breathing exercises and moments of guided meditations. There will also be a period at the end of the class for Q&As.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Michaela has served on SUS’s Health and Wellness Committee, assisted with planning mental health support on campus, gives presentations to high school students on mental health, and teaches yoga and meditation wellness programs in prisons. Michaela was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in late high school and has been passionate about ending the stigma and providing resources on how to achieve greater mental wellness ever since.
ABOUT THE STUDENT UNION
The Student Union Society is a non-profit organization run by students and for students at UFV. Through a body of elected student executives, faculty representatives, hired student staff, and a small group of permanent staff, the SUS is able to offer services to its members, advocate for post-secondary education on their behalf, connect them with student clubs and associations, and provide them with many opportunities to get involved on campus.
We employ over 50 students each semester for various positions as well as numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Check out our employment and volunteer pages for more info, we look forward to working with you!
