Young Cooks After School Series (Nov. 10 to Dec. 1)
Event Information
About this Event
- Four online classes from 4:30 to 4:45 p.m.
- Tuesdays, Nov. 10, 17, 24 and Dec. 1.
- Ideally suited for students grades 4 through 7 but students of any age may attend.
- All classes will be recorded, so videos can be viewed at a later time if you are not able to attend all of the live sessions.
- All recipes will be vegetarian. Suggestions on how to create vegan and gluten-free options will also be discussed.
Join LUSH Valley Food Action Society and registered dietitian Lisa Cristall of Fulfilling Nutrition for four weekly sessions that focus on eating healthy local food, understanding nutrition basics, and learning safe food handling practices.
Since we can't meet in the classroom, we are setting up a kitchen classroom in Lisa Cristall's home! Watch and learn via ZOOM video conference as she shares cooking tips and tricks to teach your students how to be safe and have fun while creating healthy and nutritious foods for themselves and your family to enjoy.
Participants will be inspired to be more adventurous eaters, gain a better appreciation for locally grown food, and discover how much fun it can be to experiment in the kitchen.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- The online class will run for 30-minutes, followed by a 15-minute Q & A.
- You will be sent a ZOOM link to attend the class online each week.
- Recipes and information sheets will be emailed the day before each class, to ensure that students are able to make notes as Lisa prepares, and talks about, a variety of healthy (and kid-friendly) menu options.
- This is not a 'cook along' class. Once you receive the recipes and attend the class, participants may shop for the ingredients to cook at home afterwards. When possible, we will try to use ingredients (and tools) found in a typical home kitchen.
COST: The cost for the 4-week session is $20 per household, however, as with all of our programs, bursaries/free tickets are always available. (For bursaries, please email Terri at ProgramManager@lushvalley.org.) All proceeds are invested back into our Healthy Foods Program, to ensure we can continue to provide this resource to our community.
Join the Young Cooks Club! Parents are encouraged to join the ‘Young Cooks Club’ on Facebook to share their students' questions, photos of their creations, etc. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/comoxvalleyyoungcooksclub/)
ABOUT OUR FACILITATOR: Lisa Cristall is a registered dietitian who is passionate about food and its ability to bring people together. Lisa believes that eating (and cooking!) should be enjoyable, not stressful or complicated. She has a background working in different settings including acute care and long-term care and also offers nutrition counselling services in her private practice, Fulfilling Nutrition. She takes a non-diet approach to nutrition that promotes balanced and flexible ways of eating to support a healthy relationship with food.
