Join Chef Bernie DesLauriers for this series of two Young Cooks classes with an Asian-inspired theme

About this Event

Calling all aspiring Young Cooks! Since we can't meet in the classroom, we are setting up a classroom in Chef Bernie's home kitchen! Watch and learn via ZOOM video conference as he shares cooking tips and tricks to teach you how to be safe and have fun while creating healthy and nutritious foods for you and your family to enjoy.

Topics to be covered in this two-part series are:

May 28 - It's Sushi night! Learn to roll maki and make an 'inside out roll' and an Asian salad.

June 4 - Wrap it up! Learn to make rice wraps with shrimp and chicken satay with peanut sauce.

(With the exception of the chicken satay, recipes can be adapted to be vegetarian or vegan.)

  • Young Cooks classes are ideally suited for students age six and up.
  • This is a 2-part series. You sign up once and then will be sent a ZOOM link to attend the class online.
  • The online class will run for 60-to-90-minutes and there will be opportunities for Questions!
  • A PDF of the recipes will be sent to all participants on the day of the classes.
  • This is not a 'cook along' class. Once you receive the recipes and attend the class, participants may shop for the ingredients to cook at home. When possible, we will try to use ingredients (and tools) found in a typical home kitchen.

COST: Our Young Cooks workshop series is offered as a 'Pay What You Can, If You Are Able' event. Our suggested donation is $20 for the two classes, however, as with all of our programs, bursaries/free tickets are always available. All proceeds are invested back into our Healthy Foods Program, to ensure we can continue to provide this resource to our community.

FACILITATOR BIO: Chef Bernard (Bernie) DesLauriers earned a diploma in Hospitality & Tourism at Red Deer College. He apprenticed under some well-respected chefs, earning his Red Seal Chef certification in 2012. He has extensive experience working as a chef, caterer and cooking instructor. A father of three, Chef Bernie loves to approach cooking from a creative and fun point-of-view and he looks forward to helping youth in our community improve their culinary skills and knowledge.
