Event description

Description

Aquaponics is becoming an increasingly popular form of food production, combining fish and plants in a concurrent growing system. Given its recent inclusion in the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, the Canadian General Standards Board introduced a new standard for aquaponically grown organic products, although they are prohibited under the original Canadian Organic Standards. This change has caused backlash from industry stakeholders who believe that the organic aquaponic standard misrepresents the inherent values of organic agriculture and does not meet consumer expectations of the organic brand. As the Standards review process continues, conversation around this contentious topic has been growing.

Want to add your voice to this conversation? Register for the Organic Council of Ontario's third #YourStandardsYourSay webinar to learn more and have your say! The webinar will include details on:

  • Why organic certification was extended to aquaculture products
